For years, Uganda was hailed as an HIV success story. Between 1990 and 2005, Uganda’s HIV prevalence rate dropped by 11 percent – but as of 2016, complacency has caused that rate to rise once again. Today, 7.3% of all Ugandans are living with HIV, and 230 new infections are registered every day. Due to discrimination, stigma, and a lack of access to health care, more than one-third of HIV-positive adults are not on treatment, along with more than half of all HIV-positive children.

Research has shown that if properly treated, people affected with HIV can live full, dignified lives. However, far too many people fail to access the proper care and support necessary to survive – and each year, 28,000 Ugandans lose their lives to AIDS-related deaths. Alive Medical Services exists to change such circumstances for people around the country.

Alive Medical Services exists to change such circumstances for people around the country. AMS’ doors are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide free, comprehensive HIV care to some of the most vulnerable individuals in Kampala. We are strategically located in Namuwongo, one of Kampala’s most densely populated and impoverished neighbourhoods, to ensure we reach the most vulnerable. We test over 600 new clients every month, linking an average of 96 new HIV-positive clients to quality, comprehensive care. In addition, AMS provides free anti-retroviral treatment (ART) to over 18,000 clients each year, including 1,000 HIV-positive youth and adolescents.
