Over 1,300,000 beneficiaries reached with quality comprehensive HIV/AIDS/SRHR services
Over 230,000 HIV tests have been conducted over the past 17 years, which helped AMS identify over 87,000 new HIV positive clients of whom 99% were successfully linked to immediate staging and enrolment in care.
Provided comprehensive and holistic HIV care to over 18,000 HIV clients active in care.
AMS has successfully linked 99% of clients testing positive to immediate staging and enrollment in care. For example, during the period January-June 2022, AMS had 169 clients testing positive for HIV, of whom 99% enrolled in HIV care.
Long-term retention is also AMS’ priority. Our current one-year retention is as follows for the different categories.
The current one-year retention for all clients, i.e general is 87.3%
Our current one-year retention for EMTCT is 100%
Our current one-year retention for Key population/ Priority populations is 84.6%
Our one-year retention for children and adolescents (10 – 24 years) is 100%
Surpassed expectations in almost all areas of the PEPFAR SIMS CORE Essential Element Facility Dashboard Assessment that was conducted by CDC (in October 2014 and June 2017) to assess the quality of services provided by AMS.
Tailored services to over 230,000 Priority and Most at Risk Populations.
AMS has also successfully eliminated mother to child transmission of HIV among our clients since 2013.There has been a 0% HIV mother-to-child transmission rate among mothers who become pregnant while they are enrolled in care at AMS. Almost 100% of the children that have been identified as HIV positive were enrolled into care immediately after national guidelines changed.
AMS has maintained state-of-the art innovative and holistic services throughout its growth by increasing clinic efficiencies, laboratory capabilities, support group services, and organizational funding. The Uganda Ministry of Health (MOH) have often chosen AMS as a site for piloting new technologies. This is because of our high client load, high quality of care and excellent reputation. AMS was also chosen to pilot bio-medical laboratory information system and Gen-Xpert machine as well as viral load testing.
Among nongovernmental health providers in Kampala district, AMS have been a leader in TB diagnosis and treatment in both adults and children.
Rolled out a peer-led community outreach program to support and follow-up our clients in the communities where they live. This has included training 105 adult peer educators that include over 20 KP peers who have defined job descriptions and have monthly M&E and supportive supervision sessions.
Launched the Youth corners and Clubs in 33 health facilities in Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono, that was established to provide peer-support to the over 230,000 young people (between the ages of 10-24) that access services at AMS sites.
AMS uses a rights-based approach to provide tailored care for every patient to support their physical, psychosocial, and economic well-being. AMS has gained the trust of patients because of the friendly attitude, love, and respect that staff members extend to every patient. This strong staff-patient relationship and wide range of holistic services makes AMS an innovative, top-quality HIV/AIDS clinic.
AMS uses technology to consolidate clinic services, improve efficiency, provide quality assurance, and implement program innovations and: AMS is the number one and the most efficient and effective user of Open MRS. Open MRS was piloted at AMS and currently AMS is taking lead in the upgrade of open MRS to Uganda EMR. Being a high end and effective user, the METS software engineer was seated at AMS for two weeks to draw lessons on effective use of open MRS to guide Uganda EMR. Received an award from MOH Dec 2016.
AMS was the first clinic that pioneered client-initiated community-based ART pick up that has been very successful, and which was presented to CDC and MOH and this model has now been adopted to be used nationally. AMS was also selected by MOH to be on the committee that adopted and formulated the WHO guidelines for Differentiated ART model in Uganda.
AMS is one of the pioneers of integrating legal services to HIV/AIDS services
AMS is one of the few centers in Uganda whom the population being provided HIV/AIDS services include 10% children and adolescents and youth.
AMS has also written several abstracts, two submitted and presented at AIDS 2014, two for AIDS 2016 (not presented) and recently presented an abstract at the 3rd National Quality Improvement Conference which was Title: This is How to Achieve 90-90-90: A Replicable Program Model from a High-Volume HIV Clinic in Kampala, Uganda. . In 2021 AMS presented an oral abstract at the ICASA conference. This year AMS presented an oral abstract at the AIDS 2022 conference in Canada as well as e poster at the AIDS 2022 conference.
